Parashat Vezot Haberakhah
02nd October 2026
Week of 25 September – 02 October 2026
Torah portion : Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12 Haftarah: Joshua 1:1-18
Theme: “Be Strong and Courageous: Continuing God’s Mission”
The Haftarah begins after the death of Moses. God calls Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land and repeatedly tells him: “Be strong and courageous.” (Cf. Joshua 1:6, 7, 9) This message is one of faithful leadership, obedience to God’s Word, and courage to continue the mission entrusted by God.
Parashat Vezot Haberakhah concludes the Torah with Moses blessing the tribes before his death. The Haftarah from Joshua continues the story as leadership passes from Moses to Joshua. VeZot HaBerakhah is the final portion in the annual cycle of Torah reading. In it, Moses blesses each of the tribes, excluding the tribe of Simeon. He then ascends Mount Nebo, sees the land of Israel, and dies at the age of 120. The Israelites mourn, and the portion ends highlighting Moses’ unparalleled greatness.
Moses’ mission ends, but God’s work continues. Joshua must now lead the people forward. Although the responsibility is great, God reassures him that His presence will remain with him just as it was with Moses. This teaches an important lesson: God’s mission is greater than any individual leader. Every generation receives the responsibility to continue the work of faith, teach God’s Word, and guide others toward His promises. Like Joshua, we often face new responsibilities, uncertainties, and challenges. The Lord’s instruction remains the same: be strong, trust God, and remain faithful to His Word.
As we conclude the Torah with Parashat Vezot Haberakhah, we witness the closing chapter of Moses’ earthly mission. Moses, the great servant of God, blesses the people and entrusts them to the Lord. The Haftarah immediately moves us forward. Moses has died, but God’s plan has not ended. Joshua is called to continue the mission.
Imagine Joshua’s feelings. He must follow one of the greatest leaders in history. Yet God does not tell him to rely on his own strength. Instead, God tells him repeatedly: “Be strong and courageous.” The source of Joshua’s courage is not self-confidence but God’s presence.
This message speaks to every believer. We all experience transitions, new responsibilities, and challenges. Sometimes we feel inadequate for the tasks before us. Yet God reminds us that faithfulness is more important than personal strength.

Joshua’s success depended on his obedience to God’s Torah. He was instructed to meditate on it day and night and to live according to it. The same challenge is before us today. We are called not merely to know God’s Word but to live it and pass it on to future generations.
As one chapter closes, another begins. God continues His work through willing hearts. May we respond as Joshua did: with faith, obedience, courage, and trust.
Every ending in God’s plan becomes a new beginning for those who trust Him. Like Joshua, we are called to move forward with courage, faith, and obedience.
For Reflection and Discussion:
- Am I willing to accept the responsibilities God entrusts to me?
- What mission has God placed before me today?
