He <\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">also warns<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> them <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">they will<\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> suffer if they stray from the ways of God. He tells them: <\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">For I know well how rebellious and stubborn you are. If you already have been so rebellious toward the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Lord<\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0while I am still alive among you, how much more after my death! <\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">(Deut 31:27)<\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E254\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Though Joshua is tasked to lead the people into the promised land, it is made clear that in <\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">fact, God<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> goes before <\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">them to<\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> give the land <\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">(Deut 31-3,8).<\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> Because of this Moses enjoins the Israelites to be strong and not fear their enemies. He also <\/span><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">tells Joshua<\/span><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> to be strong and courageous for God will not only be going before him but will also not forsake him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E264\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The commandment of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman qowt-stl-glossaryitem\">Hakhel<\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0(assembly) given by Moses calls for the gathering not just <\/span><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">of all<\/span><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> men, but also of women and children and even aliens living with them, every seven years, during the holiday of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman qowt-stl-glossaryitem\">Sukkot<\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0which follows the Sabbatical year (the seventh year), where the king publicly reads sections of the Torah. It is the only event that required the attendance of <\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">everyone<\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">, reminiscent of the historic moment at Mount <\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Sinai when all<\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> of <\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Israel<\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> was present when God <\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">gave the<\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> Torah. To recall, it was in Sinai that <\/span><span id=\"E284\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Israel<\/span><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> had an experience of God\u2019s presence and <\/span><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">entered<\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> covenant with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E288\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The gathering is to promote active listening of the Torah &#8211; to hear and learn, and to revere God and observe the law\u00a0faithfully \u2013 for all generations. The men who are in the temple for the Sukkot are to bring their family with them for the gathering. <\/span><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Deut 31: 12-13<\/span><span id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> states: <\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Assemble the people\u2014men, women, and children, as well as the aliens residing in your towns\u2014so that they may hear and learn to fear the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Lord<\/span><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> your<\/span><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> God and to observe diligently all the words of this law,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E298\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">and so that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E299\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Lord<\/span><span id=\"E300\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0your God, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing over the Jordan to possess.<\/span><span id=\"E301\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E302\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E303\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The biblical mitzvah of Hakhel is said to be only in effect when all the Jewish people reside in the <\/span><span id=\"E305\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Holy Land<\/span><span id=\"E306\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">. Today, Jews are encouraged not only to have these assemblies on or around Sukkot but also for the entire &#8220;Hakhel Year&#8221; to find an opportune time to promote Jewish unity and gatherings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E307\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E308\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">There are no more kings today and the responsibility to arrange Hakhel gatherings lies primarily on the &#8220;kings&#8221;<\/span><span id=\"E309\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> &#8211; <\/span><span id=\"E310\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">the leaders of each community like the rabbis and communal activists. But during this year everyone is to look for any opportunity <\/span><span id=\"E311\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">to <\/span><span id=\"E312\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">gather together some Jews and recreate a version of the grand Hakhel event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E313\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E314\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Two chapters after the par<\/span><span id=\"E315\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">a<\/span><span id=\"E316\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">shah, Moses, the greate<\/span><span id=\"E317\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">st of the prophets <\/span><span id=\"E318\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">(34:10-12),<\/span><span id=\"E319\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E320\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> leader, teacher, intercessor, wonder worker, dies <\/span><span id=\"E321\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">(Deut 34:5).<\/span><span id=\"E322\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> And as Moses\u2019s life comes to an end, so does Deuteronomy and the whole of Torah. What will happen to God\u2019s people without Moses? As today\u2019s parashah has told us, we have the blessing of God\u2019s presence. And like Joshua, we are <\/span><span id=\"E323\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">to <\/span><span id=\"E324\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">fear no one, we are to be courageous to take on leadership roles and to serve our people and spread God\u2019s words. And like the Israelites in Sinai, we have also the blessing of being in God\u2019s presence whenever we read and hear the words of God. <\/span><span id=\"E325\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Today, we will be led by <\/span><span id=\"E326\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> the living word of the Torah<\/span><span id=\"E327\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E328\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E329\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E330\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Reflection and Discussion<\/span><span id=\"E331\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">:<\/span><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> 1) If like Moses, you are about to die, what will be the urgent words you will say to your loved ones and members of your community? 2) The parashah tells us about the blessings of gathering together to read and listen together<\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> to<\/span><span id=\"E334\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> the word of God. How often do you study the Bible with your family and members of your community?
