Today is the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah, an end of a bitter year, and the beginning of a <\/span><span id=\"E144\">good<\/span><span id=\"E145\"> and sweet year. <\/span><span id=\"E146\">The Torah reading presents different themes, such as the unity of Israel, of desolation and redemption, the importance of Torah and choices. The Haftarah today <\/span><span id=\"E147\">depicts <\/span><span id=\"E148\">fundamentally the celebration <\/span><span id=\"E149\">of <\/span><span id=\"E150\">future freedom. Today\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E151\">reading<\/span><span id=\"E152\">s <\/span><span id=\"E153\">and the <\/span><span id=\"E154\">holiday food \u2013 apple and honey<\/span><span id=\"E156\">seemingly present<\/span><span id=\"E157\"> some connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-stl-NoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E161\">Moshe <\/span><span id=\"E162\">summons the entire Israel to \u201cturn around toward\u201d or \u201cto be returned\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E163\"> (<\/span><span id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3<\/span><span id=\"E165\">: <\/span><span id=\"E166\">shavta ad<\/span><span id=\"E167\">) and \u201cto return\u201d (<\/span><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05ea\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05d1<\/span><span id=\"E169\">: <\/span><span id=\"E170\">tashuv<\/span><span id=\"E171\">), who s<\/span><span id=\"E172\">tand before <\/span><span id=\"E173\">their <\/span><span id=\"E174\">past, and <\/span><span id=\"E175\">their old selves. <\/span><span id=\"E176\">For some Jewish sages, the<\/span><span id=\"E177\"> play of words is a process of realization<\/span><span id=\"E178\">,<\/span><span id=\"E179\"> repentance<\/span><span id=\"E180\">, return and renewal<\/span><span id=\"E181\">. <\/span><span id=\"E182\">The Hebrew phrase, <\/span><span id=\"E183\">s<\/span><span id=\"E184\">havta ad<\/span><span id=\"E185\"> summons us to <\/span><span id=\"E186\">choose (<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05d7\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc<\/span><span id=\"E188\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05b8<\/span><span id=\"E189\">:<\/span><span id=\"E191\">u\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E192\">bachar<\/span><span id=\"E193\">ta<\/span><span id=\"E194\">) to <\/span><span id=\"E195\">\u201cturn a<\/span><span id=\"E196\">round towards\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E197\"> G-d. Gaining a deep\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E198\">realization <\/span><span id=\"E199\">of the<\/span><span id=\"E200\"> self is an invitation to a <\/span><span id=\"E201\">new way of life, <\/span><span id=\"E202\">tashuv<\/span><span id=\"E203\">a<\/span><span id=\"E205\">that is, <\/span><span id=\"E206\">a life with G-d. <\/span><span id=\"E207\">The <\/span><span id=\"E208\">tashuv<\/span><span id=\"E209\">a<\/span><span id=\"E210\"> is a choice for a sincere repentance, desire to return and commit to a renewal of life<\/span><span id=\"E211\"> (<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span><span id=\"E213\">: <\/span><span id=\"E214\">ha<\/span><span id=\"E215\">yim<\/span><span id=\"E216\">). <\/span><span id=\"E217\">In the book of Deuteronomy, the Hebrew people are in exile, <\/span><span id=\"E218\">which <\/span><span id=\"E219\">can be analogous to<\/span><span id=\"E221\">a relationship away from G-d, a sort of spiritual suicide. Nonetheless, even a<\/span><span id=\"E222\"> cynical<\/span><span id=\"E223\"> sinner can sense G-d, because <\/span><span id=\"E224\">the <\/span><span id=\"E225\">mitzvah<\/span><span id=\"E226\"> is in \u201cour mouth (<\/span><span id=\"E227\">b\u2019al peh<\/span><span id=\"E228\">), in our heart\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E229\"> (<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b0\u05da\u05b8<\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font4-David\">)<\/span><span id=\"E233\">in the mouth, <\/span><span id=\"E234\">in the inner person, <\/span><span id=\"E235\">is <\/span><span id=\"E236\">in <\/span><span id=\"E237\">the heart, mind and will<\/span><span id=\"E238\">. This means that e<\/span><span id=\"E239\">ach of us <\/span><span id=\"E240\">has<\/span><span id=\"E241\"> a <\/span><span id=\"E242\">neshamah<\/span><span id=\"E243\"> that is<\/span><span id=\"E244\">,<\/span><span id=\"E246\">a <\/span><span id=\"E247\">piece of the Divine<\/span><span id=\"E248\">, h<\/span><span id=\"E249\">ence, we can look inward, and see more clearly our being. Given that we have a <\/span><span id=\"E250\">neshamah<\/span><span id=\"E251\">, <\/span><span id=\"E252\">that is abundant, or even i<\/span><span id=\"E253\">nfinite, we have<\/span><span id=\"E254\"> the utmost o<\/span><span id=\"E255\">pportunities <\/span><span id=\"E256\">to direct ourselves to G-d, to achieve a <\/span><span id=\"E257\">deeper level of connection<\/span><span id=\"E258\">, and eventually<\/span><span id=\"E260\">desire to be home <\/span><span id=\"E261\">with the Divine<\/span><span id=\"E262\">. <\/span><span id=\"E263\">In fact, G-d does not only wait for our return home,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E264\">but more so <\/span><span id=\"E265\">G-d brings us to authentic life that is home itself. <\/span><span id=\"E266\">We sense authentic freedom only when we choose life over death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E268\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E269\">Similarly, the <\/span><span id=\"E270\">Rosh Hashanah<\/span><span id=\"E271\"> is a feast of repentance and renewal of life depicted with its food, an<\/span><span id=\"E273\">apple and honey<\/span><span id=\"E274\">. M<\/span><span id=\"E275\">any believe that <\/span><span id=\"E276\">an apple <\/span><span id=\"E277\">has healing <\/span><span id=\"E278\">properties<\/span><span id=\"E279\">, <\/span><span id=\"E280\">while <\/span><span id=\"E281\">honey<\/span><span id=\"E282\">gives<\/span><span id=\"E284\">added<\/span><span id=\"E285\">strength. In this case, it is good to begin the year with <\/span><span id=\"E286\">a <\/span><span id=\"E287\">renewed spirit, healed from past <\/span><span id=\"E288\">hurts and aches, <\/span><span id=\"E289\">and <\/span><span id=\"E290\">have <\/span><span id=\"E291\">the strengt<\/span><span id=\"E292\">h to face challenges <\/span><span id=\"E293\">ahead <\/span><span id=\"E294\">in the coming <\/span><span id=\"E295\">year.<\/span><span id=\"E296\"> The apple and honey <\/span><span id=\"E297\">are <\/span><span id=\"E298\">not on our table, but this sweetness and strength are a<\/span><span id=\"E299\">lways<\/span><span id=\"E300\"> inside of us; <\/span><span id=\"E301\">the <\/span><span id=\"E302\">neshamah<\/span><span id=\"E304\">in<\/span><span id=\"E306\">each one, helps us <\/span><span id=\"E307\">to <\/span><span id=\"E308\">stand<\/span><span id=\"E309\"> firm<\/span><span id=\"E310\">, reflect<\/span><span id=\"E311\">,<\/span><span id=\"E312\"> and give clarity about <\/span><span id=\"E313\">the person <\/span><span id=\"E314\">we have become <\/span><span id=\"E315\">in <\/span><span id=\"E316\">the past year, <\/span><span id=\"E317\">and <\/span><span id=\"E318\">of<\/span><span id=\"E320\">remorse for the wrong we did, <\/span><span id=\"E321\">and <\/span><span id=\"E322\">hope for G-d\u2019s grace, forgiveness<\/span><span id=\"E323\">,<\/span><span id=\"E324\"> and peace. Seeing matters about our self with clarity, <\/span><span id=\"E325\">let us d<\/span><span id=\"E326\">esire<\/span><span id=\"E327\">, and <\/span><span id=\"E328\">nitzavim<\/span><span id=\"E329\"> to realign our self towards G-d, who is our Home, and who will bring us all Home.
