The first of these differ<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ent laws or obligations is <\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">the <\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">offering of<\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> the First Fruits.<\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> Moses was giving the instructions, with the priest you shall make the offering <\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">of the <\/span><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">First Fruits in a basket saying, &#8216;We remember when we were slaves in Egypt. We remember how God brought us to freedom with a strong hand <\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">and outstretched arm, with signs<\/span><span id=\"E188\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> and miracles. You, God bro<\/span><span id=\"E189\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ught us to this land flowing with milk and honey. And now I have brought these first fruits that you, God have given us&#8217; (<\/span><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Dt 26:8-10<\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">). The portion of the Salvation History, from Egypt to Canaan. The pain and cruelty of slavery, the dry and harshness of the desert<\/span><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> and now the joy and new life of this l<\/span><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">and flowing with milk and honey and the future ahead.<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> These mixtures of events forming and shaping the life of these people, is like the art of basketry, a variety of fibrous or pliable materials &#8211; anything that will bend and form a shape. Theology of the BASKET, basket of first fruits and gratitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-stl-NoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">In the second part of Deut. 26:11<\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">&#8211; 12,<\/span><span id=\"E199\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> &#8220;<\/span><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">When you have finished <\/span><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">the <\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">separation <\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">of <\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">the tithes from all your harvests and have given them to the Levite, the foreigner, the widow and the orphan, that they may eat within your very city until they are s<\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">atisfied&#8221;. I am reading this verse<\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> in mind, <\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">that <\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">there is also some first f<\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ruits or fruits from the land <\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">that <\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">are<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> offered to the less fortunate.<\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> The tithing system described in the Bible was designed specially to meet the needs of the religious, economic and political system of ancient Israel. In our Torah portion<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">, it seems tithes were used to meet the needs of foreigners, orphans and widows. (Deut. 26:12-13).<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Speaking of tithes, Korban comes into mind.<\/span><span id=\"E217\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Korban, is any of a variety of sacrificial offerings described and commanded in the Torah.<\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> In the equatio<\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">n of our lives, God and the less fortunate have a place.<\/span><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-stl-NoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">We come to the concluding discourse of Moses beginning in Deut. 26:16, Israel the people of God. Throughout the Torah, <\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">we constantly hear this prominent<\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> theme,<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> &#8220;You will be my treasured p<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ossession, if you keep my Laws&#8221;, the Genesis of the people of God.<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> The Lord has today declared you to be His<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> people, a treasured possession. <\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> He promised you, and that <\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">you <\/span><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">should keep all His commandments; and He will set you up high above all nations which He has made, for praise, and honor; and that be a consecrated people to the Lord your God, as He has spoken. (<\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Deut. 26:18-19)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-stl-NoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">My final inspiration from<\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> Ki Tavo, is the writing of the Law on stones, &#8220;After you have crossed the Jordan into the land Yahweh is gi<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ving you, you are to set up large<\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> stones and coat them with lime and write on them all the words of the Law.<\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Coating the stones with lime, &#8220;this method preserved the inscription better than an incision in the stone, which often weathered badly&#8221;(Plaut <\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">pg 1515<\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">). There are different versions of what to write do<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">wn; the book of Deuteronomy<\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">, the whole of the Torah or the essential teaching of the Torah.
