His ultimatum, \u201cunless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you\u201d (6:53) <\/span><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">provokes <\/span><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the parting of the ways.<\/span><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Reinhartz<\/span><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> suggests that the \u201ccannibalistic overtones\u201d of his words would have been not only offensive but repellant \u201cbecause Jews do not ingest the blood of the animal along with the flesh<\/span><span id=\"E170\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d; <\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">that was forbidden<\/span><span id=\"E173\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">in, for example, Gen 9:4 \u201cYou must not eat flesh with life, <\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">blood<\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, in it <\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(<\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">171, notes 53 and 60). With that, \u201cmany of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him\u201d (66). <\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Brown comments that this indication of desertion \u201cis found only in John \u2026 and may reflect a period toward the end of the <\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(first) <\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">century when the <\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Koinonia<\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> was being broken\u201d (346, note 33). <\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">There is a sense of resolution at the end of the passage when Jesus turns to the twelve and asks. \u201cdo you also wish to go away?\u201d and Peter responds:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"E186\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Lord to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"E192\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E198\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">A similar development occurs in the <\/span><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Joshua <\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">passage, which is taken f<\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">rom the final chapter of the book. The introduction to this b<\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ook in the Stone Edition refers to<\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> this chapter as Joshua\u2019s valedictory, reflecting his mission \u201cto plant the seeds of Torah in the Land of Israel\u201d (517). The setting is the solemn assembly at Shechem, convoked by <\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the elderly <\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Joshua, in which he demands of the people a decision: if they are unwilling to serve the Lord, then they must choose to serve the gods <\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">of <\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">their ancestors <\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in the land they have entered \u201cbetween the Jordan and the great sea<\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> toward the setting sun.\u201d <\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Here the resolution of the tension emerges in <\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Joshua<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> affirm<\/span><span id=\"E217\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ation<\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> that he and his household will serve the Lord<\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">; that prompts the people to acknowledge how \u201cthe Lord our God\u201d brought them out of the land of slavery and has protected them wherever they went, which leads them to the profession of faith:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"E220\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Therefore, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E228\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">A somewhat similar dynamic is played out quite subtly in <\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Ephesians <\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">5:21-32<\/span><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, which<\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> explores the \u201cgreat mystery\u201d of the relation between Christ and the Church. The author seeks a metaph<\/span><span id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">o<\/span><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">r by which to elucidate that relationship and finds it in the intimacy of marriage<\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. The <\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">text\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">attempt to distinguish the roles of husband and wife leads <\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Grossman <\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">to <\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">describe <\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">them<\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> as a \u201chierarchical relationship of mutuality\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> and perhaps that <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">provides a<\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> key. The<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> passage<\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> begin<\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">s<\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> with the mutuality of kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiveness, loving as Christ loved us and gave himself for us<\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">; the text moves on to: <\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201cbe subject to one another out of reverence for Christ<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> Ideally, ultimately, the two \u201cbecome one flesh\u201d finding<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, through their love, <\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the ways to resolve the <\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">differences and <\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">tensions that emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E268\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Reflection and Discussion<\/span><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">: <\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">1.
