F<\/span><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">rom the obligations of judges to the limitations on the power of kings<\/span><span id=\"E167\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">, the well-being of a society depends neither on the goodwill of the ruler nor on the ascendance of the most capable in a competitive environment, but <\/span><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">rather <\/span><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">on the certainty that the law will treat all alike and will protect the most vulnerable against the most powerful.<\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The absolute primacy of justice, a theme that occurs throughout the Torah, perhaps receives its greatest emphasis here. It has been said that since the time of Abraham, Justice has spoken with a Hebrew accent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E172\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The<\/span><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> most direct, intimate and force-filled entry into the world of the Hebrew Bible is through the power of the Hebrew language. All translations are the product of the choices of other people, at other times, with personal agenda that may not match those of the reader\/student. The Sages of old used to maintain that reading the Bible through a translation may be likened to kissing a bride through a towel\/veil! However, while being \u201clanguage-challenged\u201d to some extent, and thus at the mercy of the translator, we can profitably compare several translations of a verse or passage, and, in addition, consult some of the <\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">ancient and modern<\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> commentaries<\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">. <\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The call is to <\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">constantly beware <\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">the plain as well as hidden meaning of the Biblical text. <\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The divine utterance is Torah itself, which i<\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">s then garbed in other tongues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E184\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Th<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">e very opening line of this week\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">parashat<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">haShavuah<\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> goes on to say: \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">You<\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> shall appoint magistrates and officials \u2026 in all the settlements and the gates \u2026 that they shall govern the people with due justice\u201d (<\/span><span id=\"E199\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Deut. 16:18)<\/span><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The Torah advises that we must set guardians at the gates of our souls \u2013 our mouths (that we do not lie or speak malicious gossip), our ears (that we not be eager to hear malicious gossip) and our eyes (that we not form the habit of seeing the worst in others).<\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">A modern non-Biblical midrash of Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s three monkeys represents the principle<\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u201chear no evil, see no evil, speak no <\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">evil\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">(<\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">www. <\/span><a id=\"E212\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gandhi'sThreeMonkeys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">Gandhi\u2019sThreeMonkeys<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The Hebrew <\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">tzedek<\/span><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> is justice in the sense of doing the right thing in a legal procedure while <\/span><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">mishpat<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">is justice as a cosmic principle that maintains harmony in the world and makes possible the world\u2019s continued existence.<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> According to the contemporary Hassidic Master <\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Arthur Green<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> in \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Justice, justice shall you pursue<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d the term \u2018pursue\u2019 carries strong connotations of effort, eagerness which implies more than merely respecting or following justice; we must actively pursue it. This command also means to \u201cpursue justice justly,\u201d for just goals can never be achieved by unjust means. The worthiest of goals will be rendered less worthy if we have to compromise justice to achieve it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">The Torah is meant to be read aloud preferably with a<\/span><span id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">havrutah<\/span><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> partner, or even when we read it alone! The music of the original language has a special beauty which translations ordinarily cannot adequately suggest unless the translation is as true to the Hebrew words and music as possible. The spokenness of the biblical text is understood as a critical factor in doing Talmud Torah. Finally, at all times we are invited to read beneath the plain, the literal meaning of the text: the <\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">peshat<\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">. Archeology of the Word, excavating beneath the <\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">peshat<\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> when there are irritations in the text, that is, clues that suggest that we should do so: these are the means to a midrashic reading of Talmud Torah. Midrash in its many appearances is a core dimension of the study of <\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">Torah<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">. It is, perhaps, the most vitalizing and valuable approach to all biblical texts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"E243\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">For Reflection and Discussion<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">: <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">[<\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">1<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">]<\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">For the Biblical sages, the double use of <\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">tsedek<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\"> (\u2018justice\u2019) invited creative <\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font1-TimesNewRoman\">interpretation.
